The PMD is a flexible measuring device for individual parts and assemblies in car body construction.
The components in the car body construction must be machined to an accuracy of tenths of a millimeter in order to meet quality requirements. To check the dimensions, the sheets are measured several times using optical or tactile methods. To do this, they must first be clamped in a fixture that holds them exactly in the installation position. At present, an individual measuring fixture is provided for this purpose for each individual sheet metal component. The PMD, on the other hand, is able to set itself up independently for a new measuring task in less than 2 minutes. To do this, it uses support points that can be positioned very precisely via NC axes. Instead of a large number of individual measuring fixtures, only one flexible measuring fixture is required - the PMD.
The PMD has been developed in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology.
Advantages
The servo motor driven measuring device PMD consists of a base frame with one to three levels. Each of these levels can be equipped with up to four gantries. Each gantry has two trolleys, each with a telescope, which allow movement in all three spatial directions. On each telescope there is a slide with the tool holders. These offer a flexible tool connection and independent movement of the sliders to each other.
A basic frame with three levels corresponds to the basic version of the PMD and opens up a working area of size 2000 mm x 2000 mm x 480 mm. To accommodate small, compact parts, the gantries can be collapsed to 55 mm. If, on the other hand, larger parts such as side walls are to be clamped, the PMD can be flexibly adapted.
